Indra’s blog: About a Birthday Party and What it Means to Be a Professional Team

My eldest son recently celebrated his birthday. As he turned 13 years old, we had to come up with something different than a big bouncy castle in a local hall. We decided to take the boys to a basketball play off and what a night it turned out to be.
My eldest is a basketball player himself and plays in the CVL of the Newcastle Eagles with his Morpeth team. Because of that, our family automatically turned into basketball supporters. Never having been a big sports fan, but I love the pace of this game; the agility of the players, the spirit of the supporters and most of all the fact that there seems to be little place for theatre play. On a basketball court is no lying around on the floor and “faking” injuries. It is a get up and go mentality. The game must go on.

Not all of the friends my son invited were as much of a basketball fan as he is, so it was exciting to see how they got into the spirit of the game. They became huge supporters. It turned out to be very exciting to watch as the two teams very much chased each others tail the whole time. It was a movie moment to see that in the last few seconds a basket was scored, bringing the game to a draw and giving extra time. And despite all our cheering, we saw the Newcastle Eagles being defeated by just a very very thin margin.
They had absolutely given it their all and it must have been so devastating to loose the game at their home ground. But then the birthday boy and his friends got to take a picture with their team. I can so imagine how the Eagles did not feel like smiling, but they did. And they took their time for it.

After that, I thought they would rush to their changing room to have a moment. Nope. Instead, they showed up for ALL their fans with a smile. They went around and put their signatures on balls, on posters, on fumbled pieces of papers and on t-shirts. They went around the whole court and tried to get to everyone. Still smiling, still taking pictures with fans that were asking. Then they got told to stop signing as it was getting late and they were pulled off the court.
I could only admire them for what they just pulled off. Being so professional to still show up in such a way for your fans, even when the moment is tough. I hope it made them feel as good as they made us feel.
And yet, it made me think that we actually do that too. During the COVID lockdown when the private dental teams were allowed to practice again if they wanted to do so, we were there. In full suits with big masks, that made it hard to breath. But we recognised our patients still needed hands-on dentistry and not just a phone call and some antibiotics. Or on other occasions when life threw a curve ball in our personal lives, we still showed up and were there with a smile for our patients. And if we really couldn’t be there in person, there was another team member that stood up and took over.

I feel so blessed to have this amazing team around me; they are not just very good at what they do, but they are absolute stars with a heart of gold.
We are still taking on new patients. So, if you haven’t had the pleasure to see us in action, this is your chance. Please come and do so and my team and I will give you our very best.
Indra xx
