Indra’s Blog: About Children Routinely getting Dental Health Exams too

A few months ago I realised I never brought my kids to the optician to have their eyes checked. Even though I go for two-yearly exams myself to make sure all is well and vision is as razor-sharp as it should be (being a dentist and all), I just thought the checks done at my children’s schools were enough. But being sure at what ages optical ones had to be done …. I had to draw a blanc. So on asking the optician they explained that it is always important to book in when you have concerns, but otherwise regular eye tests from around age 3-4 years are encouraged to have the kids checked with an interval set after their first appointment. Hmm, that sounds very similar to dentistry really. Even though we would like to see kids from around six months after their first tooth appears, but no later than their first birthday really. In that way they can get used to the dental environment, sit on the chair and meet us all. It gives us a chance to detect problems early and we can help with advice on oral hygiene.

Did you know that kids up to age 5 go free when taken in on the dental health exam appointment of their parents when these are on one of our dental care plans? If they are older they can go on their age-appropriate children’s care plan for a reduced fee!
So, what happened at the optician’s you might think? My eldest two blazed through their appointments …. looking at balloons, getting puffs in their eyes …. but the youngest had a bit more trouble and had to come back to be reassessed. He then needed glasses, even though it turned out it was for three months only. Kids are all different, so you can’t assume if one is fine, so are the others. And obviously, that goes for their teeth too…

Glad we ticked those boxes off again. What about your kids?; Eyes and teeth health examinations up to date? If not, teeth are definitely our department and we would love to help! Please do get in touch with our lovely team for any questions or to get your child(ren) booked in to get it sorted.
