Indra’s blog: About my Kitchen Disaster and our Skilled Team

Two weeks ago I wrote in my blog about our team culture and the love of cake that we share. I also told you how Tamsin is our master cake maker and we have some really good other bakers as well. This might have left you wondering how my baking skills are. Well, it is no secret; they are not very great. When I was still living in the Netherlands,
I used to be pretty decent at a nice “appeltaart”: freely translated into Apple tort, but those words don’t really do justice to the good old proper Dutch delicacy that it is.
Obviously, with all the amazing baking that Tamsin used to bring to the practice I didn’t want to stay behind. So one day I decided I would try my hand at a carrot cake. I got the recipe of my then Australian nanny and let’s be honest, in hindsight, I should have just asked her to bake it. But no, off I went. It needed to be big, to feed home and work, so it took forever to prep. When it was finally time to put the mixture in the preheated oven, I opened the oven doors and honestly, I still don’t know what I did, but I managed to drop the huge tin and the carrot batter found its way between the two glass panels that were the oven door. The door was hot and the whole thing started to set on the inside of the glass panels. I tried to scoop out what I could, but the disaster just unfolded in front of my eyes and it was a total kitchen nightmare. Once the oven had cooled down the cleaning took forever. It was not a pretty sight and neither was the mood it left me in.

What I learned that day? You don't need to be good at everything. Learn to delegate. Surround yourself with amazing people that can do what you are not good at or they can do better, so you can focus on other things.
Want does that mean for the practice? First of all, other people do the baking. But really, it means that you will see the practitioner that excels at the dental work that needs doing for you. Our hygienist will take care of your hygiene appointments. There is no quick five minute scale and polish with the dentist during your dental health review. It just doesn’t do justice to the time you deserve to get a squeaky clean mouth and the time it takes to explain what you can do best to keep it like that.
You might see a different dentist for your root canal treatments than you see for your Invisalign / braces and for your implants. And that is just to make sure that everyone’s time is used in the best way possible and you see exactly the right person for the job. Away is the time where there is only one person responsible for the full scale that dentistry is nowadays. We work with a full team concept.

Our dental nurses are not just sitting there waiting for the dentist to take action, ours are highly skilled professionals as well that have trained in different fields: most can take your x-rays and are superior at digital scanning, Alison can do venipuncture, Georgia can take CBCTs and is almost fully qualified in Oral Health Education.
As a team we are here to serve and help, giving the best outcome to you, our patient. And at the same time, above all, doing what we love, so you get the most value and care that you deserve.

Just a small reminder that I am training for the Great North Run. I am taking on the biggest half marathon of the North East in aid of the Sick Children’s Trust and the Tiny Lives Fund.
