Indra’s blog: About Geodes and the Surprise that’s inside

Sometimes magic is in small things. We are on holiday and are strolling over a historic market. The boys are looking in all the stalls and then suddenly excitement rises. The eldest has found a piles of geodes. These are still in stone form. Closed. If you buy one, you can pick your own and then open it yourself in the big stone press. You don’t know what’s inside, which colour stone you will find or how many crystals there are. The surprises are plentiful.
My eldest son has always been interested in gemstones, more than the other boys were. I always felt it was meant to be, but today that circle felt more round than ever. As a child I found an amethyst geode, a real treasure that I kept my entire life. In one way or another these kept popping up during my life. When my first child was growing in my belly, one of my lovely patients gave me a geode. She is a very intelligent and interesting person with a fond interest in archeology and gemstones. The geode represented the round belly with the surprise that a new baby holds. While growing in your belly, you don't know what will come out. The gender, the character, their features, how much they do or don't look like you mentally and physically. The wonder of life really. And she gave me a cheeky smile when she said I could either open it to find out what the geode was like or I could be patient, like I would need to be with a child, to see their full true colours while they grow up. Even though I am very curious and did find out the gender of all three of our boys before they arrived, I did manage to contain myself and despite my eldest being 12.5 years old now, I have yet to open "his" geode.

Back on that historic market, he carefully picked the ONE. The geode, he thought was going to have the right surprise inside. He was looking for one that was not solid, but had a nice opening with crystals formed inside. He learned he had to weigh them on his hand and pick a light one. After some consideration and discussion with his brother what the best one was going to be, a big round one was picked. The sales lady of the market stall helped him to set the stone up in the press and before we knew it, the geode split in a few pieces. The sun came out and the shimmers and magic that the geode holds sparkled our way. What a treat.
The geode and it's surprises made me think about the dentistry that we do too. Often a patient comes in and would like their dream smile created, but doesn't know what that looks like. It can be hard to trust your dentist into creating that smile if you are not sure what the outcome will be. Luckily we have ways to show you, as AI and digital dentistry are the way forward. We can plan and do trial smiles on pictures or in the mouth. You can have a play with your picture here if your are interested in straight teeth:

A bit like x-raying the geode; It comes close to the real thing, but the true magic happens when the mirror is lifted and the patient sees their final outcome. Still one of the best moments that dentistry holds for the team and myself.
Creating magic one smile at a time...
