Indra's blog: About How even the Dentist can Leave her Hygiene Appointment Overdue

ree

Today I was a bit ashamed of myself, but I decided I am going to share this with you anyway. Why? To show you it can happen to the best of us and especially the ones that should know better.

Our lovely hygienist Sarah had one of her patients reschedule last minute in her hygiene diary and therefore when I logged into the computer the evening before and noticed it, I popped myself in that appointment slot. I didn't check my patient notes, but thought it must have been a year ago, so my teeth were well overdue some tender love and care.

This morning I arrived and Sarah welcomed me with her ever twinkling eyes and open smile. She is such a gem. We followed the standard appointment routine. I say we, but obviously I mean they as I had a comfortable lay in the softest chair we have in the practice, while enjoying some scenic views on the television on the ceiling. Andrea, the dental nurse, was reading out some notes. While that probably would have gone amiss to the standard population, my dental ears were alarmed. Sorry, HOW LONG AGO WAS THAT? April 2022 was the reply. I could not believe it. I could have sworn it was last year, but no, almost 3.5 years ago. How our mind can play tricks. The good thing is, I did not have any complaints and luckily there were no surprises found. But was it smart? Absolutely not.

Depending on your dental situation you should really visit the hygienist every 3-12 months, which for most people means every half year. Follow her direction and you know you are getting it right. We totally understand that cost can be a major factor. We have some great dental plans that provide very good value for money and are a big cost saver. The biggest benefits of these plans is, that because you have an x amount of hygiene (and dentist) visits included in your care plan, it is more likely that you will take it up. Obviously there are loads more advantages to it.

Of course the practice sent reminders, but in the end it is our own responsibility to book an appointment. The easiest thing to do is to book it before you leave the building after your previous appointment. When done well in advance the times are easily moved around if you needed to and at least ... you won't forget to book it ... like I did.

I left the room with pearly white and lovely smooth teeth again. Just a reminder how nice such a gentle appointment actually can be. This dentist now has a reminder set for herself as well, because it shows..... sometimes if we have to trust the mind to remember everything.... it might not always work out the right way.

Has this blog reminded you that you might be quite over due on your dental appointment (whether with one of our dentists or hygienists), please don't hesitate to get in touch. We will be more than happy to get you back on track.

Just a small reminder that I did the Great North Run. I took on the biggest half marathon of the North East in aid of the Sick Children’s Trust and the Tiny Lives Fund.

If you like to know more or help me support these amazing charities, you can still do so here:

It is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
