Indra’s blog: About Team Culture and our Love of Cakes at Berwick Smile

Anybody that knows the practice a bit or follows us on our socials, will be aware of our love of home made cakes. Whenever there is something to celebrate, and trust me, there often is, we celebrate with cake. (Or chocolate or similar).
Birthday? Cake…
Anniversary? .. Cake
Somebody needs cheering up? Cake….
New baby? Cake …
Holidays… Cake…
Any other reason that you can come up with? You guessed it… Cake!
It stems from the time there were only three of us at the practice. And one of those three happened to be Tamsin. She was not only very fond of baking cakes (still is actually), but she happened to be very good at it too. And what can’t be forgotten is that she managed to find time to bake and Laura and I were very willing volunteers to taste her creations. We added master cake baker to her job description and that was that.

As we were only with three and Tamsin’s and mine birthdays happen to be only a few days apart, there was not a lot of opportunity to eat cake. So we found new reasons as often as we could.
It set a culture. Celebrating together. It just does something. Eating a home made cake together feels like a little party. And then the team grew and grew over the years and with that the amount of reasons to eat cake multiplied. Tamsin also “baked” some babies, so her time became a bit more tight. That didn’t matter, sometimes we order some specials in and it turned out others in the team were quite the baker as well.
However … we now had so many reasons we had to reign in the cake opportunities in as we were seeing it in the uniforms that started to get a bit tighter .. especially mine.
It even came to the inevitable … the big question arose: Should we be having cake at all? And more importantly: Should we show you on our social media what happens in our team kitchen? We are a dental practice after all. By showing off our cake loving community we are not promoting a sugar limited diet. It was a difficult one. We talked about it at management level. And then decided we are only human. And everybody knows our love of cake and chocolate. It is not a healthy option, but I do feel you need to see some perspective. Yes, we eat cake (and chocolate: guilty), but we also make sure we limit our sugar (food) moments and usually have cake with our team lunch (which have quite the reputation as well). The flip-side must obviously be that we have a thorough oral hygiene regime.

So we think that should be the take away. Yes, we can have cake. And yes, you can too. Enjoy, don’t deprive yourself, but keep it within limits and follow the advise of (y)our hygienist and oral health educator every day. We have some amazing ladies here at the practice that take care of just that. So if you are not sure about your habits or want to know if you are ticking off all the right boxes; Come and see our wonderful ladies. Our hygienists are even available through direct access (without seeing the dentist). For overall dental health we do advise to visit the dentist at your recommended interval as well.
Happy to help… for all your oral health needs.
